Where light finds its purpose

A sanctuary for photographers who refuse to settle for ordinary.

Step inside Juniperriverlane, where every surface whispers possibility. The scent of aged oak mingles with the faint hum of Profoto D2s warming up. Natural light spills through 12-foot skylights, softening the terracotta walls into a canvas of warmth. This isn’t just a studio — it’s where your vision takes shape, frame by perfect frame.

Juniperriverlane studio interior with natural light and terracotta walls

Our Story

Born from frustration. Built for perfection.

In 2026, photographer Elias Voss found himself in a familiar predicament: another soulless studio rental with flickering fluorescents and peeling backdrop paper. The final straw came during a high-stakes e-commerce shoot for a luxury skincare brand — the power tripped twice, the air conditioning failed, and the client’s trust evaporated along with the natural light. That night, over a glass of Barolo at his kitchen table, Elias sketched the first blueprint for Juniperriverlane on the back of a takeout menu. Three years later, after scouting 47 locations across Portland, we opened our doors in the historic Slabtown district — a 4,200-square-foot sanctuary designed for creators who demand more than just four walls and a power outlet.

2026: The Spark

Elias Voss photographs a luxury skincare campaign in a generic studio, enduring power outages and failing equipment. The experience plants the seed for a different kind of creative space — one built by photographers, for photographers.

2026: The Search

After two years of scouting, we acquire a former woodworking studio in Slabtown. The space still smells of cedar and linseed oil, with 14-foot ceilings and a wall of north-facing windows that flood the room with golden-hour light year-round.

2026: The Build

We gut the interior, salvaging the original oak floors and repurposing the wood into custom backdrop stands. The terracotta accent wall is hand-troweled by local artisan Mateo Ruiz, using clay sourced from the Willamette River banks.

2026: The Opening

Juniperriverlane welcomes its first clients: a collective of Portland-based photographers for a three-day workshop. The scent of fresh espresso from our in-house barista station mingles with the sound of shutters clicking and laughter echoing off the terracotta walls.

2026: The Expansion

Demand grows, and we add a second studio space — the Loft — with a 20-foot cyclorama and a dedicated hair and makeup station stocked with RMS Beauty and Aesop products. The Loft’s skylights are fitted with motorized blackout shades for seamless transitions between natural and artificial light.

2026: The Community

We launch our Journal, a digital magazine featuring interviews with photographers, lighting tutorials, and behind-the-scenes stories from shoots at Juniperriverlane. Our first issue features portrait photographer Ming Smith and sells out within 48 hours.

The Team

The hands and hearts behind every perfect frame.

We’re not just studio managers — we’re photographers, lighting nerds, and problem-solvers who’ve stood where you stand. Every member of our team has shot professionally, so we don’t just hand you a key and a parking pass. We anticipate the unspoken needs: the extra C-stand, the steamer for last-minute wrinkles, the quiet corner to review shots without interruption.

Elias Voss, Founder & Lead Photographer

Elias Voss — Founder & Lead Photographer

Elias cut his teeth assisting Annie Leibovitz in New York before relocating to Portland, where he’s shot campaigns for Nike, Adidas, and local distilleries like Freeland Spirits. His work has been featured in Communication Arts and PDN, and he still picks up his camera every week — because the best studio owners never stop being photographers. You’ll find him adjusting the Profoto D2s in Studio A or brewing a pour-over in the lounge.

Mira Chen, Studio Director & Lighting Specialist

Mira Chen — Studio Director & Lighting Specialist

Mira’s lighting diagrams are legendary among our regulars. A former gaffer for film sets, she can turn a blank white wall into a moody editorial backdrop with nothing more than a stripbox and a scrim. She’s also our resident gear whisperer — if a Broncolor Siros isn’t firing, Mira can diagnose the issue in three questions or fewer. Her secret weapon? A well-worn copy of *Light: Science and Magic* that she’s annotated in the margins.

Javier Morales, Operations & Equipment Manager

Javier Morales — Operations & Equipment Manager

Javier knows every piece of gear in our inventory by serial number. A former photo assistant who’s worked on sets from LA to Tokyo, he’s the reason our equipment room runs like a Swiss watch. Need a Phase One XF IQ4 with a 150mm lens for a product shoot? Javier will have it cleaned, calibrated, and ready before you finish your coffee. His pre-shoot checklist is so thorough, it’s been adopted by studios in Seattle and Vancouver.

Lena Park, Client Experience & Barista

Lena Park — Client Experience & Barista

Lena ensures your day runs smoother than the oat milk latte she’ll hand you when you walk in. A former art director turned full-time studio host, she’s the mastermind behind our welcome packets, which include a hand-drawn map of nearby lunch spots and a handwritten note with her direct line. Lena’s espresso machine — a La Marzocco Linea Mini — is the most photographed piece of equipment in the studio after the Hasselblad H6D.

Mateo Ruiz, Studio Artisan & Backdrop Designer

Mateo Ruiz — Studio Artisan & Backdrop Designer

Mateo’s hand-painted backdrops are sought after by photographers across the Pacific Northwest. Using techniques he learned from his abuelo in Oaxaca, he creates seamless surfaces that look like aged plaster, weathered wood, or sun-bleached concrete. His signature terracotta wash — the same one used on our accent wall — is now a staple in our rental inventory. When he’s not in the studio, you’ll find him foraging for clay along the Columbia River Gorge.

Nadia Kowalski, Digital Tech & Post-Production

Nadia Kowalski — Digital Tech & Post-Production

Nadia is our secret weapon for high-pressure shoots. A former retoucher for Vogue and W, she’s the reason our Capture One workstations are calibrated to within a 2% color variance. Need a tethered shoot with real-time retouching? Nadia will have your files backed up to three locations before you’ve changed lenses. Her workstation is a shrine to precision: Wacom tablet, Eizo monitor, and a framed print of her favorite Richard Avedon portrait.

Studio Philosophy

We believe great photography happens when preparation meets serendipity.

A studio isn’t just a room with good light — it’s a catalyst for creativity. Our philosophy is built on three pillars: Precision, Intention, and Respect. Precision in our equipment and spaces, so you never waste a minute troubleshooting. Intention in our design, so every surface and tool serves a purpose. And respect for your time, your craft, and the trust you place in us when you walk through our doors.

Precision: No Compromises

Our Profoto D2s are calibrated monthly to ensure consistent color temperature. The cyclorama in Studio B is repainted every 90 days with a proprietary blend of matte white that eliminates hotspots. Even our Wi-Fi network is optimized for tethered shooting, with a dedicated 1 Gbps line for file transfers. We sweat the small stuff so you don’t have to.

Intention: Every Detail Matters

The terracotta accent wall isn’t just a design choice — it’s a psychological one. Studies show that warm, earthy tones reduce stress and encourage creativity. Our lounge area is stocked with Aesop hand wash and Marvis toothpaste because we believe comfort fuels focus. Even the height of our countertops is intentional: 36 inches, the perfect ergonomic height for reviewing shots on a laptop.

Respect: Your Time, Your Craft

We don’t book back-to-back sessions, so you’ll never feel rushed. Our welcome packet includes a handwritten note with the team member’s direct line, because we know questions don’t wait for business hours. And our cancellation policy is simple: life happens. Reschedule up to 24 hours before your session with no fees — because trust is more important than a full calendar.

Community: Creators Supporting Creators

We host monthly lighting workshops led by photographers like Ming Smith and Dan Winters. Our Journal features interviews with local creatives, and we offer discounted rates for students and emerging artists. Because the best studios aren’t just spaces — they’re ecosystems where ideas grow.

Sustainability: Leave No Trace

Our electricity comes from 100% renewable sources, and we’ve eliminated single-use plastics from our kitchen. The oak floors in Studio A were salvaged from a 1920s schoolhouse, and our backdrop paper is made from 30% post-consumer waste. Even our cleaning products are non-toxic, so you’re not inhaling fumes while you work.

Innovation: Always Evolving

We were the first studio in Portland to offer a virtual tour with 360-degree views of our spaces. Our booking system integrates with Google Calendar, so you can see availability in real time. And we’re currently testing a new AI-powered lighting assistant that suggests setups based on your subject and mood. The future of photography starts here.

Our Values

The principles that guide every decision we make.

Values aren’t just words on a wall — they’re the compass that steers us. These six principles shape how we design our spaces, treat our clients, and build our community. They’re the reason photographers drive from Seattle and Vancouver to shoot here, and why brands like Nike and Adidas trust us with their most important campaigns.

1. Obsession Over Convenience

We don’t cut corners. Our Profoto D2s are calibrated monthly, our cyclorama is repainted every 90 days, and our Wi-Fi network is optimized for tethered shooting with a dedicated 1 Gbps line. We’re obsessed with the details so you can focus on the shot. Even our coffee beans are sourced from a single-origin farm in Guatemala and roasted weekly by a local micro-roaster.

2. Trust is Earned, Not Given

We don’t lock our gear room or hide our pricing. Our cancellation policy is simple: reschedule up to 24 hours before your session with no fees. We believe trust is built through transparency, not contracts. That’s why we include a handwritten note in every welcome packet with the direct line of the team member who’ll be assisting you.

3. Comfort Fuels Creativity

A studio should feel like a second home, not a sterile box. Our lounge area is stocked with Aesop hand wash, Marvis toothpaste, and a La Marzocco espresso machine. The terracotta accent wall isn’t just for aesthetics — it’s a psychological choice, proven to reduce stress and encourage creativity. Even the height of our countertops is intentional: 36 inches, the perfect ergonomic height for reviewing shots.

4. Community Over Competition

We host monthly lighting workshops led by photographers like Ming Smith and Dan Winters. Our Journal features interviews with local creatives, and we offer discounted rates for students and emerging artists. We believe the best studios aren’t just spaces — they’re ecosystems where ideas grow. That’s why we’ve partnered with local art schools to offer internships and mentorship programs.

5. Sustainability is Non-Negotiable

We believe great photography shouldn’t come at the expense of the planet.

6. Innovation is a Mindset

We were the first studio in Portland to offer a virtual tour with 360-degree views of our spaces. Our booking system integrates with Google Calendar, so you can see availability in real time. And we’re currently testing a new AI-powered lighting assistant that suggests setups based on your subject and mood. We’re always looking for ways to push the boundaries of what a studio can be.

Gear Obsession

The tools we trust to bring your vision to life.

We don’t just provide gear — we curate it. Every piece in our inventory has been tested, tweaked, and vetted by our team of photographers. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions, which is why we offer a range of modifiers, cameras, and accessories to suit every style and budget. And because we know that gear is only as good as the person using it, we provide detailed spec sheets and setup guides for every item in our rental inventory.

Lighting: Profoto D2 1000Ws

Our workhorse strobes, known for their lightning-fast recycle times and rock-solid reliability. We’ve paired them with a range of modifiers, from the soft, diffused light of a 5-foot Octabox to the punchy contrast of a 7-inch reflector. Each unit is calibrated monthly to ensure consistent color temperature, and our team can help you dial in the perfect setup for your shoot.

Cameras: Hasselblad H6D-400c

For when only the best will do. The H6D-400c captures 400-megapixel images with stunning detail and dynamic range. We’ve paired it with a selection of prime lenses, including the 100mm f/2.2 for portraits and the 28mm f/4 for wide-angle shots. The camera’s dual card slots and tethering capabilities make it ideal for high-pressure commercial shoots.

Modifiers: Broncolor Para 133

The Para 133 is a favorite among our fashion and beauty photographers for its unique, wrap-around light. The parabolic shape creates a soft, even illumination that flatters skin tones and highlights texture. We’ve mounted ours on rolling stands for easy positioning, and our team can show you how to use it to create everything from high-contrast editorial looks to soft, dreamy portraits.

Backdrops: Hand-Painted Seamless

Our collection of hand-painted backdrops is one of our most popular rentals. Created by local artisan Mateo Ruiz, each backdrop is a one-of-a-kind piece, with textures ranging from aged plaster to weathered wood. The terracotta wash — the same one used on our accent wall — is a client favorite for its warm, earthy tones. We also offer a range of seamless paper in standard colors, all made from 30% post-consumer waste.

Accessories: Tether Tools Aero

Tethering is a game-changer for high-pressure shoots, and the Aero system is the gold standard. We’ve outfitted each of our workstations with an Aero table, complete with a built-in cable management system and a high-resolution monitor for reviewing shots. Our team can help you set up a tethered workflow that keeps your files organized and your shoot on track.

Grip: Matthews Road Rags

No grip kit is complete without a set of Road Rags, and ours are some of the most well-used in Portland. These heavy-duty sandbags are perfect for securing light stands, boom arms, and C-stands. We’ve filled ours with a mix of steel shot and sand for maximum stability, and our team can show you how to use them to create rock-solid setups that won’t budge, even in a breeze.

Monitors: Eizo ColorEdge CG319X

Color accuracy is non-negotiable, which is why we’ve outfitted our workstations with Eizo ColorEdge monitors. These 31-inch displays are calibrated to within a 2% color variance and feature built-in sensors that adjust for ambient light. Whether you’re reviewing shots, retouching images, or just checking your email, you can trust that what you see on screen is what you’ll get in print.

Software: Capture One Pro

We’ve chosen Capture One Pro as our tethering and RAW processing software for its unparalleled color accuracy and powerful editing tools. Our workstations are pre-loaded with custom ICC profiles for our cameras and monitors, ensuring consistent results from shoot to edit. Our team can help you get up to speed with Capture One’s interface and workflow, so you can spend less time fiddling with settings and more time shooting.

Voices from the Studio

What creators say about shooting at Juniperriverlane.

Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what photographers, brands, and clients have to say about their experience at Juniperriverlane. From the seamless booking process to the meticulous attention to detail, these testimonials capture what it’s really like to shoot here.

Ming Smith — Portrait Photographer

"Juniperriverlane is the first studio I’ve found that truly understands the needs of a working photographer. The natural light in Studio A is unparalleled, and the team’s knowledge of lighting is second to none. I shot a series of portraits for The New Yorker here last month, and the images came out better than I could have imagined. The terracotta wall added a warmth to the photos that I couldn’t have achieved in a generic white box. And the espresso machine? A lifesaver during long shoot days."

Daniel Kim — Nike Senior Art Director

"We’ve shot campaigns for Nike, Adidas, and Patagonia at Juniperriverlane, and it’s become our go-to studio in Portland. The spaces are versatile, the gear is top-notch, and the team is incredibly professional. For our last shoot, we needed a moody, high-contrast look for a new line of running shoes. Mira Chen, the studio director, suggested a setup using the Broncolor Para 133 and a 7-inch reflector. The results were exactly what we envisioned — punchy, dynamic, and full of energy. And the fact that they offer a virtual tour made it easy to plan the shoot remotely."

Sophie Laurent — Freelance Photographer

"As a freelancer, I don’t always have the budget for a high-end studio, but Juniperriverlane’s day rate is worth every penny. The spaces are beautiful, the gear is well-maintained, and the team is incredibly supportive. I shot a lookbook for a local fashion designer here last month, and the images turned out better than I could have hoped. The hand-painted backdrops by Mateo Ruiz added a unique texture to the photos, and the natural light in Studio A made the fabrics look incredible. Plus, the welcome packet with nearby lunch spots was a nice touch — I ended up trying a new sushi place that’s now my favorite."

James Whitaker — E-Commerce Brand Founder

"We’ve shot product photography for our skincare line at Juniperriverlane for the past two years, and it’s been a game-changer for our brand. The team’s attention to detail is unmatched — they noticed that one of our bottles had a slight imperfection in the glass and helped us source a replacement before the shoot. The Hasselblad H6D-400c captured every detail of our products, from the texture of the cream to the sheen of the packaging. And the fact that they offer a dedicated post-production workstation with Eizo monitors saved us hours of editing time."

Aisha Patel — Student Photographer

"I’m a photography student at PNCA, and Juniperriverlane has been an incredible resource for me. They offer discounted rates for students, and the team is always willing to answer my questions and help me learn. I shot my senior thesis project here last semester, and it was the first time I’d ever worked in a professional studio. The team walked me through every step of the process, from setting up the lights to tethering my camera. The images I captured here helped me land an internship with a local advertising agency, and I’m forever grateful for the experience."

Ryan Chen — Wedding Photographer

"I’ve shot engagement photos and wedding day details at Juniperriverlane for the past three years, and it’s become an essential part of my workflow. The terracotta wall is perfect for romantic, moody portraits, and the natural light in Studio A makes even the simplest bouquet look like a work of art. The team is incredibly accommodating — they let me store my gear overnight before a shoot and even helped me set up a flat lay for a client’s wedding invitations. And the fact that they offer a cancellation policy with no fees is a lifesaver in this industry."
